The main difference between a 2.1 and a 5.1 home theater system is the number of speakers and channels used for audio playback.

But in the market, if you are buying a local or low-cost Home Theater with 5 speakers and one woofer, they use stereo channels to provide audio in all the speakers. One channel works with 3 speakers and another channel will work for the other two speakers.

It is called 5.1 speaker Home Theater, it is not 5.1 channel home theater.

Then what is 5.1 channel home theater? –

It uses 5 channels to stream different channels in different speakers. it is called the original 5.1channel Home Theater.

So whenever you are purchasing, a home theater with 5 speakers, you should be clear about this thing that you are buying a 5.1 channel home theater or 5.1 speaker home theater.

Let’s understand the difference between both types of channel configuration –

2.1 Home Theater System –

The “2” in 2.1 refers to the number of main channels handling the mid-range and higher audio frequencies. Typically, this involves “2” front speakers (left and right stereo speakers).
The “1” refers to the presence of a separate subwoofer that handles low-frequency sounds (bass).
So, a 2.1 home theater system generally consists of two main speakers and a subwoofer. So, it is called 2.1 Home Theater.

5.1 channel Home Theater System –

The “5” in 5.1 refers to the 5 number of audio channels. This configuration includes center, left, and right front channels, and left and right surround channels. The “1” again refers to the presence of a separate subwoofer for low-frequency sounds. A 5.1 home theater system consists of five channels – center, front, and surround speakers and a subwoofer.

5.1 Speaker Home Theater System –

The “5” in 5.1 refers to the 5 number of speakers including the subwoofer. This configuration includes a center speaker, left speaker, right front speakers, and left and right surround speakers.
The “1” again refers to the presence of a separate subwoofer for low-frequency sounds.
A 5.1 home theater system consists of 2 audio channels which are distributed 1 channel for 3 speakers and another 2nd channel for 2 speakers, and low-frequency distributed in a subwoofer.
