Doordarshan Terrestrial Digital Television (DT-DTV) uses digital signals instead of radio signals to broadcast TV channels.

How does DTV work?

The information in a digital signal is transmitted as binary bits which are put back together at the receiving end to form a picture and sound.

Television digital signals can be compressed more efficiently than conventional television signals. Therefore they use less bandwidth on the electromagnetic spectrum. These digital signals provide the capability for more TV channels and better picture quality. It makes more economical use of scarce radio spectrum space; It can broadcast up to seven channels in the same bandwidth used by a single analog channel.

The current situation in India –

Presently, most of the Doordarshan Kendras are using two frequencies to broadcast their Doordarshan channels.

Digital television is also called DTV. Modern digital television broadcasts in high definition (HDTV) and SD channels with a higher resolution than analog TV. At present, the HD channel of Doordarshan is available on the DTT platform. Soon other HD channels of Doordarshan including DD News HD, DD India HD, DD Sports HD will be added.

As digital television broadcasting standards have been adopted in various parts of the world, India has also shifted Doordarshan and DD News analog channels to the DTT platform.

Future of Digital TV (DTV) –

So you can say that DTT is another popular platform that will soon be promoted by local Doordarshan Kendra. Regional Doordarshan Kendra may also open e-auction for filling DTT slots by local channels. Local channels will help in promoting the DTT platform.

If you are purchasing a new LED /LCD TV then you must confirm with your manufacturer that they are providing a digital tuner inbuilt or not. Because if there are analog tuners then there is no use of it. You will not able to watch Doordarshan channels in the traditional style.
